Quintessence

Quintessence is a cooperative platformer game made on Unity during the 2017 Global Game Jam. At the end of the Jam, the group win a stand at the Japan Touch Haru Event in the IndieLab area. I joined the team after the GGJ.

In Quintessence, players have to share the gamepad to control the two different characters. The game was thought to be played on switch but can be played on all platform that has a controller.

Pharen, the fire character needs Ash, the water character to progress. They are complementary. The entire game is based on the idea of sharing the gamepad because the players are complementary too and they can't progress without working together. Like our two characters.

Indeed, Pharen can't touch the water, and Ash can't touch the ground. The level design was thought around that simple idea: The characters and the players can't progress alone and the game has the intention to bring closer the players themselves. Fathers and children, sisters and brothers, couples... For us, they live a story and an adventure together like our two characters.

We worked on the game every Saturday and Sunday to create a good prototype with some levels and with functional mechanics. It's was an amazing experience to work together at a friend's house every weekend.

During the Japan Touch Haru, approximately 50 -70 persons tried the game and gave us a lot of interesting feedback. Most of them liked the game and the intention of playing together and communicating was respected. It was really beautiful to see parents sharing a moment to play and laugh with their children.

Furthermore, we also had an article (In french) on our school website. You can found the link by clicking on the link here: https://www.brassart.fr/ecole/actualites/japan-touch-2017
